Mahalia Jackson’s Gospel Music Mastery

 

Mahalia Jackson, "the world's greatest gospel singer," was a renown musical innovator and pioneering business woman. So far, however, little is known about her creative process and the strategies she deployed to blaze a musical trail despite facing considerable gender, race, and class barriers to acceptance and achievement. Based on my ongoing research, this paper focuses on her vocal craft and elucidates the ways in which she fashioned gospel music mastery.
